A card has two defining properties the Suit and Rank. The suits are identified by the symbols Hearts, Spades, Diamonds, and Clubs and contain 13 cards. The cards in the suits' are ranked (have a value) from 2 (the lowest rank) to Ace (the highest value).
In poker the winning hand is the one most difficult to make. The ranking of the hands are as follows:

- Straight Flush - Odds are 1 in 3,591 (in a 7 card game) and 1 in 72,193 (in a 5 card game).
- Four of a Kind - Odds are 1 in 595 (in a 7 Card game) and 1 in 4,165 (in a 5 Card game).

Royal Flush Consists of the suited cards Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and 10. Example: A of Clubs, K of Clubs, Q of Clubs, J of Clubs, and the 10 of Clubs.
Straight Flush Consists of sequential cards of the same suit. Example: 2 of Hearts, 3 of Hearts, 4 of Hearts, 5 of Hearts, and the 6 of Hearts. A straight flush may not "wrap around" from the highest to lowest rank so the cards K, A, 2, 3, 4 are not a straight flush.
Four of a Kind Consists of a set of four cards of the same rank plus a fifth card (the "kicker"). Example: 7 of Spades, 7 of Clubs, 7 of Hearts, 7 of Diamonds, A of Diamonds.
Full House Consists of three cards of one rank and another two cards (a pair) of a different rank. Example: 9 of Diamonds, 9 of Clubs, 9 of Hearts, 3 of Diamonds, 3 of Clubs.
Flush Consists of five cards of the same suit. Example: Q of Diamonds, 10 of Diamonds, 9 of Diamonds, 4 of Diamonds, and the 2 of Diamonds.
Straight Consists of five cards in sequence. Example: 7 of Clubs, 8 of Diamonds, 9 of Diamonds, 10 of Hearts, and the J of Clubs. A flush may not "wrap around" from the highest to lowest rank thus the cards K, A, 2, 3, 4 are not a flush.
Three of a Kind Consists of three cards of the same rank and two other cards (called "kickers"). Example: 5 of Hearts, 5 of Clubs, 5 of Diamonds, and K of Clubs, 3 of Diamonds.
Two Pair Consists of two sets of two cards of the same rank (a pair), plus one other card (the "kicker"). Example: 8 of Diamonds, 8 of Spades (the first pair), 2 of Clubs, 2 of Diamonds (the second pair), K of Clubs (the "Kicker").
One Pair Consists of two cards of the same rank along with three other cards. Example: 10 of Diamonds, 10 of Hearts (a pair), A of Diamonds, K of Hearts, 4 of Spades.
High Card Is a hand that is none of the above hands. The highest ranking card in the hand (the High Card) is all you have. Example: J of Spades (the high card), 10 of Diamonds, 7 of Clubs, 5 of Diamonds, 4 of Hearts.
