When two or more hands are of equal rank some tie breaking rules come into play. These are:
Straight Flush
When two or more players have a straight flush the flush with highest ranking card wins. Thus: J of Clubs, 10 of Clubs, 9 of Clubs, 8 of Clubs, 7 of Clubs beat 10 of Spades, 9 of Spades, 8 of Spades, 7 of Spades, 6 of Spades.
Four of a Kind
When two or more players have four of a kind the highest ranking hand of four cards wins. Thus: 8 of Clubs, 8 of Spades, 8 of Diamonds, 8 of Hearts, 10 of Spades beat 7 of Hearts, 7 of Diamonds, 7 of Spades, 7 of Clubs, A of Clubs. In some games it is possible for several hands to have four of a kind. In this case the hand with the highest ranked kicker wins the pot. If the highest kicker in these hands is equally ranked there is a tie and the pot is split.
Full House
When two or more players have a full house the winning hand is the one with the higher ranked of three identical cards. Thus: 9 of Hearts, 9 of Diamonds, 9 of Spades, 3 of Hearts, 3 of Clubs beat 6 of Diamonds, 6 of Clubs, 6 of Spades, A of Hearts, A of Clubs. When more than one player has three cards of equal rank in their hand the hand containing the highest pair wins. If the pairs are equally ranked then the hands are tied and the pot is split.
Flush
When two or more players have a flush the hand with the highest ranking cards wins. Thus: Q of Diamonds, 10 of Diamonds, 9 of Diamonds, 4 of Diamonds, 2 of Diamonds beat 10 of Hearts, 9 of Hearts, 6 of Hearts, 4 of Hearts, 2 of Hearts. The hands are compared from the highest ranking cards down to the lowest valued cards. Starting with the highest ranked cards they are compared, if the same the next highest ranked cards are compared. This goes on until one hand has a higher ranked card than the other, and it wins. If all the cards are of the same rank (identical but in different suits) you have a tie and the pot is split.
Straight
When two or more players have a straight the hand with the highest ranking card is the winner. Thus: K of Hearts, Q of Diamonds, J of Clubs, 10 of Diamonds, 9 of Hearts beats 9 of Spades, 8 of Clubs, 7 of Clubs, 6 of Clubs, 5 of Diamonds. If all the cards are of the same rank you have a tie and the pot is split.
Three of a Kind
When two or more players have three of a kind the hand with the highest ranking hand of three cards wins. Thus: 5 of Clubs, 5 of Spades, 5 of Diamonds, 3 of Diamonds, K of Spades beats 4 of Hearts, 4 of Spades, 4 of Clubs, 8 of Clubs, A of Hearts. When more than one player has three cards of equal rank in their hand the hand containing the highest kicker wins. If the kickers are equally ranked then the hands are tied and the pot is split.
Two Pair
When two or more players have two pair the hand containing the highest ranking pair of cards wins. Thus: 8 of Diamonds, 8 of Clubs, 2 of Spades, 2 of Clubs, K of Spades beats 7 of Spades, 7 of Diamonds, 3 of Clubs, 3 of Spades, K of Clubs. If the higher ranked pair is the same the lower ranked pairs from each hand are compared. Thus 10 of Hearts, 10 of Spades, 5 of Spades, 5 of Diamonds, K of Spades beats 10 of Clubs, 10 of Diamonds, 2 of Hearts, 2 of Spades, K of Clubs. If the hands contain two identical pairs then the kicker in each hand is compared the highest value kicker wins. If the kickers are the same then the hands are tied and the pot is split.
One Pair
When two or more players have one pair the hand with the highest ranked pair wins. Thus : 8 of Hearts, 8 of Clubs, K of Clubs, 9 of Diamonds, 6 of Spades beats 7 of Hearts, 7 of Clubs, K of Clubs, 6 of Diamonds, 3 of Diamonds. When the pairs are identical the highest ranked cards are compared if the cards have the same value the next highest cards are compared, and so on until a winner is established when one hand has a higher ranked card than the other. When both hands are identical the pot is split.
High Card
When the best hands are high card hands the highest ranking card in each hand is compared, if the same the next highest cards are compared. This is repeated until one hand is found to have a higher ranking card. If both hands are equal the pot is split.
The suit of the cards is not usually used to break a tie. The only place where suits are used to break ties is when high-carding for the button prior to a tournament, in this case the reverse alphabetical order of the suits is used, from highest to lowest the ranking is Spades, Hearts, Diamonds and Clubs.
